It is with great pleasure that I introduce the Resource Center, the special education program at Union School. This program made its debut in 1989 and our philosophy has been that all children will reach their personal and academic potential with the appropriate support and direction.<\/p>\n
The main purpose of the center has been to provide an educational program for students identified as having learning challenges based on psycho-educational evaluations. The program implements classroom practices designed to improve academic outcomes and behavioral performance while building self-awareness. We offer a full continuum of special education and related services in the least restrictive environment to children based on an Individualized Education Program (IEP).<\/p>\n
We pride ourselves on the individualized attention provided to each of our students. The average teacher-student ratio is approximately 1:3, with class sizes ranging from 1:1 to small classrooms of up to 10 students. Students attend all required academic courses and remedial courses in the areas of math and reading. The program includes elementary (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12); however, classes may be grouped by academic need rather than by\u00a0grade.<\/p>\n
All students are required to fulfill all requirements for graduation and the majority of students pursue higher education.
